ADMISSIONS
We invite you to attend one of our Wednesday evening Open Houses for parents that are held almost every month throughout the school year beginning with a presentation at 7:00 p.m. and which also provide visitors with an opportunity to see our school and ask questions about our program.
If you are not familiar with the work of Arrowsmith School, we invite you to view our VIDEO. This fifteen minute introduction provides an overview of our program and we hope it will answer many of your questions about what we do and the suitability of our program for your child.
You may also contact Daina Luszczek, Arrowsmith School Secretary, at 416 963-4962 or by email to dluszczek@arrowsmithprogram.ca and she will be pleased to answer any questions you may have about admissions and enrolment.
Please also refer to the Descriptions of Learning Dysfunctions which contains a list of the learning problems that our program addresses and their common features. The program at Arrowsmith School may be of benefit your child if there is a match between your child's areas of difficulty and the symptoms described here.
Is the Arrowsmith Program suitable for your child?
Students entering Arrowsmith School have ordinarily been experiencing a range of problems including
- reading
- writing
- mathematics
- comprehension
- logical reasoning
- visual memory
- auditory memory
- dyslexia
- non-verbal learning
- attention
The typical student at Arrowsmith School
- is of average or above average intelligence
- has a combination of the learning dysfunctions that are described in the Descriptions of Learning Dysfunctions on our web site and in our Brochure
- does not have severe intellectual, cognitive, emotional or behavioural disorders that would significantly affect his or her ability to participate in the Arrowsmith Program.
- does not have acquired brain injury, autism or pervasive development disorder
- is of elementary, secondary or post-secondary school age
These are guidelines only. There are many students who fall within these guidelines, others who may require further consideration and still others for whom we feel this program cannot provide meaningful benefit.
For example, we do not accept children with severe autism but we have had success with students with Asperger Syndrome who exhibit some behaviours associated with autism which in turn can range from mild to severe. Some professionals consider Asperger Syndrome to be the same as or similar to high functioning autism, others associate it with non-verbal learning disorder and it also shares characteristics with pervasive development disorder.
For such students, there is no hard and fast rule and we will consider their appropriateness for our program in consultation with their parents.
These considerations apply equally to students enrolling at one of the schools that offer our program.
How to enroll your child at Arrowsmith School
The decision as to whether a student who is experiencing difficulty at school may be suitable for Arrowsmith School can usually be made based on discussion, by telephone or in person, with parents and often with the students themselves.
Where necessary, we can also review school report cards and results of academic and psychological testing. Our experience has shown that most parents can identify with great accuracy the problems that their child is having at school.
We can also provide you with a copy of our enrolment package containing the documents that we ask families to complete at the time of enrolling their child in Arrowsmith School.
We suggest that parents review the List of Dysfunctions that appears on our web site under the Descriptions of Learning Dysfunctions heading above or review the abbreviated list that appears in our Brochure.
Each student enrolling at Arrowsmith is assessed to determine the student’s learning profile and to plan the student’s program. Information about the assessment procedure is in the Assessment section of our web site.
We will arrange a meeting with you approximately four to six weeks after the assessment is complete to discuss the results.
This meeting will take about an hour and a half at which time we will provide you with a written learning profile describing the strengths and weaknesses in the 19 specific learning areas that have been assessed.
Enrollment and tuition at Arrowsmith School
The annual tuition is $17,750 and includes all program and academic fees and materials for the full school year. There are no other fees or charges except for an annual activity fee in the additional amount of $250 per year that covers such things as the school yearbook, school trips and other special events.
There are no taxes (G.S.T or P.S.T.) payable on the tuition amount or activity fee which is, however, eligible for the Medical Expense Tax Credit under the Income Tax Act (Canada). This credit is available to Canadian taxpayers only.
This is a significant tax credit which will, for example, result in an estimated tax saving of about $3,000 for a family with a combined annual income of $100,000. Please refer to the information contained under the Tax Credit heading above. |
