That Offer the Arrowsmith Program

Colin Macdonald Community School is the only school in Hamilton
and Halton region that offers the Arrowsmith. It was one of the
first schools outside Toronto to offer this program and has dedicated
one classroom within to working with students with learning difficulties.
Colin Macdonald offers the Arrowsmith Program within the larger
academic school which includes multi-sensory education and the
Orton Gillingham approach that provides a highly structured reading
program.
Teachers in the Arrowsmith classroom have been trained and certified
in the Arrowsmith Program methodology and in the Orton Gillingham
approach. The members of the academic staff are all accredited
teachers.
Students in the Arrowsmith Program at Colin Macdonald will typically
spend four periods per day on the Arrowsmith Program cognitive
exercises and the other half of their day participating in our
enriched academic and arts program and other school activities.
This includes two periods per day on language arts that is taught
using the Orton Gillingham method and mathematics.
Students entering the Arrowsmith Program at Colin Macdonald
frequently feel low self-esteem due to their lack of academic
and social abilities. The goal at Colin Macdonald is to give
these students an opportunity to concentrate on their areas of
difficulty while participating in the enriched program of the
school.
