OUR
SCHOOL PROGRAM
THE ARROWSMITH SCHOOL FULL TIME DAY PROGRAM
The majority of our students are enrolled in the full time day
program which is the foundation of Arrowsmith School, spending
six periods per day on the Arrowsmith cognitive exercises and
the other two periods on academics with one period of English
and one of mathematics.
Students attending Arrowsmith School have been experiencing
a range of problems including
- Reading
- Mathematics
- Comprehension
- Logical reasoning
- Visual memory
- Auditory memory
- Working memory
- Dyslexia
- Non-verbal learning
- Attention
- Processing speed
Students at Arrowsmith School will typically spend three
or four years in our program before returning to a full academic program in a public or private school.
The links at the top of this page contain information about
the areas of learning difficulty, including a description of
the Learning Dysfunctions, addressed by this program and a description
our Methodology.
Each new student is fully assessed at
Arrowsmith School so that we may assess his or her areas of
strength and weakness and design a program of cognitive exercises
specifically for that student’s
particular learning profile.
Information about the assessment process may be found on the Assessment page of our web site.
Anyone who has taken up an activity that involves developing
a skill, whether it is playing a musical instrument or learning
a sport like tennis or golf, knows the importance of drills and
of doing them properly. The same principle applies to the cognitive
exercises that make up the Arrowsmith Program.
Students who come to Arrowsmith School have been struggling
in school - some are just starting their schooling but their
experience has already shown a pattern of learning problems.
Others have been finding school a challenge for years.
Our students all have the fundamental intelligence to manage
schoolwork but have been held back by their learning disabilities.
The cognitive exercise program at Arrowsmith School is designed
to strengthen the learning capacities that underlie the learning
difficulties that our students have been experiencing in school.
The two daily academic classes that almost all of our students
participate in are closely integrated with the cognitive exercise
program and form an important part of our program. Please visit
our Academic Classes page for more information.
Arrowsmith School provides an environment where students who
have been having difficulty in school obtain a sense of accomplishment
by mastering increasingly difficult levels of the cognitive exercises
and discover that their strengthened learning capacities are
allowing them to handle academic work that they could not do
before.
Our teachers provide guidance, support and encouragement and
all of the students in our school recognize that they are working
toward a common goal of increasing their learning capacities.
Students who had been feeling isolated and defeated by school
develop new social skills and a sense of personal self worth.
Our low student to teacher ratio ensures that each student receives
personal attention.
PART-TIME PROGRAMS
We also offer part-time programs for students who may not be
able to enroll in the full time day program including a Saturday
program for students whose main area of difficulty is writing.
You may obtain additional information about these programs on
the Part Time Programs page.
